Ross, Spear Lead Spartans in 5-1 Win Over UNLV

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Seven was a good number for Spartan pitcher Ethan Ross on Sunday as he struck out seven in seven innings pitched to help the San José State (18-14, 13-11) to a 5-1 win over UNLV (23-20, 10-14) in a Mountain West contest at Excite Ballpark.

  • Ross improves to 5-5 on the season with the win. He allowed just one run, a homer in the top of the first inning to the third batter of the game.
  • Matt Spear got the Spartans on the board with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. He took the second pitch he saw at the at bat over the right field fence to also score Theo Hardy who drew a walk to start the inning.
  • Spear has eight home runs on the season, all hit during the month of April
  • Dalton Bowling tripled to deep center field in the sixth inning to score Robert Hamchuk who drew a walk to get on base.
  • The Spartans added two more runs in the seventh as Jackson Forbes scored on a Hunter Dorraugh single to left. Dorraugh eventually scored on a Hamchuk sacrifice fly to right field.
  • Before leaving the game, Ross pitched his way out of a base-loaded jam in the seventh inning, striking out the final Rebel he faced.
  • Jesse Gutierrez made his 15 appearance of the season on the mound, pitching the final two innings, striking out two of his seven batters faced.
  • Seven Spartans had at least one hit in the game, and Hardy drew two walks.
