Women's Cross Country Competes At NCAA Regional

Eugene, Oregon -- The San Jose State women’s cross country team concluded their season at the NCAA West Regionals on Saturday, November 10. The Spartans finished in 25th place in a 31-team competition. The 6K race featured five nationally ranked teams, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Oregon, and No. 5 Arizona State.

Erica Sahli (22:27.25) concluded a stellar career by leading the SJSU women with a 105th place finish. It was the third time the senior has been the top Spartan runner. In her four seasons, the team co-captain has been one of the top-three SJSU finishers in every race she has competed in. Dating back to the start of her sophomore season, Sahli has finished as one of the top-two SJSU runners in each of her races.

Arely Marquez (22:40.60) was the second SJSU finisher in 122nd place. The freshman from San Jose has either has been one of the top-two Spartan finishers in five of her six races.

Jenna Hicks (23:03.00) finished her third season with a 146th place finish, While Marlene Elizalde crossed the finish line with a time of 23:25.70. The four-time, scholar-athlete honoree, finished her career that featured a 2006 second-team All-WAC selection.

Annaliza Rizo continued her strong season with a time of 23:37.00, a career-best for the sophomore from Vacaville.

Running in their first NCAA Regional Championship, Nisha Richardson finished with a time of 24:12.75, while Lauren Dubay finished the 6K course in 25:17.55.

Stanford took the team title, while Teresa McWalters (Stanford) won the individual race with a time of 19:57.30. The Spartans were able to finish ahead of conference rival Hawai’i, but were unable to top local rival, Santa Clara, who finished 22nd.

SJSU concluded a 2007 season that featured a young team that gained valuable experience when it ran against many of the nation’s top teams throughout the year. Although the Spartans will miss the leadership of Sahli and Elizalde, head coach, Augie Argabright, is looking forward to the 2008 season when he returns 17 of 21 runners from the 2007 squad.
