Women's Cross Country 12th at Cal Poly Invitational

San Luis Obispo, Calif.-----For the first time this season, the San Jose State University women’s cross country team failed to place in the top half of the team standings when it finished 12th out of 14 teams at the Cal Poly Invitational.

The Spartans had a team total of 336, far behind host Cal Poly, which had a score of 43. The unattached team of Track West was second with 54 followed by Southern Utah with 91. No other team in the field had a score under 100.

Nikki Espinoza was the top Spartan finisher with a time of 20:51.9 on the 5,000-meter course. She finished in 63rd place, more than three minutes behind Kareen Nilson, who ran unattached and finished first with a 17:39.4 clocking.

None of San Jose State’s top three runners this season, Ana Martinez, Ashleigh Nebeker and Kim Nebeker competed for San Jose State.

The team returns to action, Saturday, October 27, at the Western Athletic Conference Championships hosted by the University of Hawai’i.
