Women, Sixth; Men, Seventh at WAC Cross Country Championships

Honolulu, Hawaii-----The San Jose State University women’s cross country team finished sixth and the men’s cross country, team, seventh, at the 2001 Western Athletic Conference Championships hosted by the University of Hawaii.

The Spartan women were led by Ana Martinez, who finished fifth overall among 73 runners with a time of 18:34.5. Hawaii’s Cheryl Smith, named the 2001 WAC "Athlete of the Year" in a vote by the conference coaches, was an easy winner with a 17:42.8 clocking over 5,000 meters.

Kim Nebeker gave the Spartans a second runner in the top-10, finishing ninth at 18:44.6. With their top-10 finishes, Martinez and Nebeker were named to the All-WAC team. Martinez was a first-team selection for the second straight season and Nebeker was named to the second team.

Tulsa won the team championship with a score of 80, edging out Rice that was second with 89. San Jose State had a 120 score for sixth place.

Matthew Heard was the top San Jose State finisher in the men’s race. He had a time of 27:47.8 over the 8,000 meter course to finish 27th. Freshman Robby Philipp was next with his 32nd place finish.

San Jose State, with 186, finished ahead of Boise State, which had a 192 score. Rice was the team champion in the men’s division with a score of 51, three points better than UTEP’s 54.

The cross country teams conclude their season at the NCAA District VIII Championships hosted by the University of Arizona on November 11.
