Ana Martinez Named WAC Cross Country "Athlete of the Week"

Englewood, Colo.----- Ana Martinez, the top finisher at each of San Jose State University's first two women's cross country meets this season, was named the Western Athletic Conference's "Athlete of the Week" for
competitions occurring the weekend of September 21 and 22.

Martinez finished second at the UC Davis Invitational on September 22 with a time of 17:54.90 on the 5,000 meter course. The resident of King City, Calif., was one of only two runners to post a time below 18 minutes. She was the top finisher among the Western Athletic Conference entrants from San Jose State, Fresno State and Nevada in the 22-team competition.

A 2000 All-Western Athletic Conference first-team selection, Martinez has two second-place finishes in the team's two 2001 meets. She also was second at the University of San Diego Invitational on September 8.

The San Jose State University women's cross country team returns to action September 29 competing in the Stanford University Invitational.
