Women's Cross Country Sixth At WAC Championship

Las Cruces, N.M.-----Team captain Jenna Hicks was the top finisher for San Jose State University at the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Championship, but it was the running of Suzanne Hancock, Arely Marquez and Kate Lambdin that made the day memorable for the Spartans.

Hancock, Marquez and Lambdin all finished ahead of Fresno State’s number-three finisher and provided the margin of difference allowing San Jose State to finish ahead of the Bulldogs in team competition for the first time this season.

The Spartans, picked by the conference coaches to finish seventh at the WAC meet, came in sixth with 154 points. Fresno State, picked fifth, was seventh with 168 points.

Utah State won the WAC Championship with a score of 48. Idaho was second with 66.

Hicks led the Spartans over the 5,000 meter course set up at the New Mexico State University Golf Course in a time of 19:20.90 and was 24th. Nisha Richardson was next at 19:37.70, good for 29th place. Hancock was 31st; Marquez, 35th; and Lambdin, 41st.

In cross country, team scoring is kept based on the places of the first five finishers for a squad. Though Fresno State had two runners place in the top-20, the next three Fresno Satte runners were 42nd, 56th and 62nd.

Idaho’s Allix Lee-Painter was the winner with an 18:00.20 time.
