SJSU Women Run Strong At WAC Championship

Logan, Utah --  The San Jose State women’s cross country team finished in seventh place at the WAC Championship on Saturday, October 27.  Arely Marquez’s 5K time of 18:01.71 was the fastest time by a Spartan in 2007.

Marquez led the Spartans for the third consecutive race, finishing in 27th place.  The freshman from San Jose has lowered her 5K time in every race she has competed in, improving by almost a full minute since her first race of 2007.  Marquez beat her previous top time by 10 seconds.

Erica Sahli set a personal season’s best time of 18:13.40, finishing in 32nd place.  The Spartan co-captain has finished as one of the top-two SJSU runners in every race she has competed in since 2005.

Jenna Hicks finished in 34th place with a time of 18:18.04, a career best.  The junior beat her 2006 WAC Championship time by over a minute.  Nisha Richardson also set a career top-time of 18:23.44, beating her previous 5K best by over 20 seconds.

Overall, the SJSU placed five runners in the top-40.  Seven of nine Spartan runners’ posted times under 19-minutes, while a total of five Spartan runners set new career-best 5K times.

Although listed at an elevation of 4,534, head coach, Augie Argabright, did not believe the Logan altitude affect his team, “I don’t think it was a factor, what played a bigger role was the level of competition, it was awfully tough this year”

Argabright said of his young team, “Most of our team is underclassmen.  Of 18 runners this season, 14 should be back next year, so we’ll use this race as valuable experience for the future.  We’re now going to look forward to the NCAA Regional in (Eugene) Oregon.”

Idaho won the team title, while Breanna Sande of Boise State was named the WAC cross country “Athlete of the Year” after she finished with a time of 17:01.32. Wayne Phipps of Idaho was named coach of the year.

The next race for the Spartans will be the NCAA Regional in Eugene, Oregon, on November 10.  SJSU will battle with local rival, Santa Clara, for two points in the annual “Rivalry Series.”
