Women's cross country finish eighth at Santa Clara

Santa Clara, Calif. The San Jose State University women’s cross country team finished in eighth place at the Santa Clara 5K Bronco Invitational on Saturday, October 14.  Erica Sahli led the Spartans, with a time of 18:10.00, she finished in 16th place, her fourth top-20 finish of 2006.

Along with Sahli, Marlene Elizalde had a strong performance, finishing 27th.  Her 18:26.00 was a 5K career best.  Tabitha Guzman and Allison Stiller also set 5K career bests.  Guzman took 42nd place with a time of 18:44.00, while Stiller finished less than a two seconds behind Guzman, taking 44th place with a time of 18:45.90.

Saturday’s race was the third race in as many weeks for most of the Spartan runners.  Although tough, head coach, Augie Argabright feels that it can help the Spartans, “It’s hard to run three weeks in a row, especially for runners like Nisha (Richardson), Annaliza (Rizo), and Amanda (Carlucci) who are all freshmen, but I wanted them to run a 6K last week.  I think they handled this stretch pretty well going into the WAC Championship.”

Stanford won the 13-team overall competition, while Charlotte Schonbeck of Nevada won the individual competition with a time of 17:24.  Although the Spartans faced Santa Clara on their home course Saturday, the results will not count towards the official “Rivalry Series” between the Spartans and Broncos.  The winner of the two rivalry series points will be determined at the NCAA Regional meet in Portland, Ore. on November 11, where both teams will meet on a neutral course.

Next up for the Spartans is the WAC Championship on Saturday, October 28, in Fresno, Calif.  In 2005, the Spartans finished third, led by Tiffany Hall’s and Erica Sahli’s 12th and 13th place finishes, earning both runners a second team All-WAC selection.
