Youth Shine Bright In Women's Cross Country Meet

Santa Clara, Calif. The San Jose State University women’s cross country team finished in 11th in the 16-team Santa Clara Bronco Invitational, on Saturday, October 13.

Arely Marquez led the Spartans with a time of 18:11.00. The freshmen from San Jose turned in the best 5K time by any SJSU runner in 2007. For the second consecutive race, Marquez has led the Spartans, after being the top SJSU finisher at the Notre Dame Invitational.

Erica Sahli finished 45th with a time of 18:20.00, in the final tune-up before the WAC Championship in two weeks. Dating back to her sophomore’s season, the senior co-captain has been the first or second Spartan finisher.

Jenna Hicks continued her strong season, finishing with a time of 18:33.00, a career-best. She took off nearly a full minute off her time from the 2006 Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.

The Spartan women took 11th in the 16-team race. In preparation for the WAC Championship, the Spartan women faced four opponents they will run against in two weeks. Nevada finished fourth, while Boise State and New Mexico State finished ninth and 10th. Hawai’i finished four spots behind SJSU, taking 15th place.  Laura Mickelson of Loyola Marymount took the individual crown of 17:03.00, while USF took the team title.

In the Santa Clara Open race, SJSU finished third in the six-team race. Annaliza Rizo had a career day, setting new personal bests with her fourth-place finish and time of 19:02.00 in the 59-runner race.

Although the Spartans competed against Santa Clara in the Bronco Invitational, the winner of the two “Rivalry Series” points will be determined at the NCAA Regional Championship in Eugene, Oregon, on November 10.

After a week off, the Spartans will compete for the conference title in the WAC Championship in Logan, Utah, on October 27. In the 2006 WAC Championship, the Spartan women finished third, while three runners earned All-WAC honors.
