Women's Cross Country: Martinez Leads Spartans at National Meet

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Led by Ana Martinez and Janina Crain, the San Jose State University women's cross country team finished third at the Cross Country Only National Championships, held today (Saturday).

Martinez completed the 6,000 meter Forest Park course in 22:46. She finished second, 11 seconds behind the winner, Cheryl Smith of Hawai'i. Crain placed fifth with a time of 22:58.

San Jose State scored 61 points. Creighton won the meet with 39 points and Hawai'i was second with 51 points. Eight teams competed in the meet.

Johanna Ballentine crossed the finish line in 13th place. Her time was 23:51. Laurel Stender finished 19th in 24:31. Megan Stone came in 22nd in 24:42.

Rebekah Harmer (25:01) and Janette Najera (25:16) finished 27th and 28th, respectively.

There were a total of 80 runners in the race.

San Jose State's next competition is Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Long Beach Invitational.
