Running only six days after the 6K Pepperdine Invitational, the Spartans used a mixture of veteran leadership and promising youth to deal with the toughest stretch of the 2007 season.
The Spartans were led by Arely Marquez, who turned in a personal-best time of 18:30.00; the team’s second fastest time of 2007. Finishing 25th in her third intercollegiate race, the freshmen Marquez has finished in the top-25 in all of her races.
Erica Sahli finished in an unorthodox 39th place, due to a mid-race fall. Sahli was still able to finish strong with a time of 18:40.00 as the second Spartan finisher.
Jenna Hicks continued her strong season with a time of 19:06.00. Only 26 seconds off her career-best 5k time, Hicks has been the third Spartan finisher in two of the three races this season.
Joining Marquez, fellow freshman Jessica Gonzales set a new 5k career-best time of 19:22.00.
Marlene Elizalde (19:10.00) and Nisha Richardson (19:32.00), both broke the 20-minute barrier to finish 86th and 113th in the 213-runner “Gold” race.
The second half of the Spartan women’s cross country team will compete in the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, September 29th.
