Cross Country: Spartan women 3rd, men 4th at Fresno State Invitational

FRESNO -- Ana Martinez led San Jose State to a third-place finish in the women's race and Trevor Marca paced the Spartans to fourth in the men's race at the Fresno State Invitational cross country meet Saturday (Sept. 16).

Martinez finished fifth over a 6K course with a time of 22:05. Janina Crain was 19th overall, Johanna Ballentine came in 22nd overall, Laurel Stender finished in 36th place and Rebekah Harmer came in 39th for the Spartans.

San Jose State scored 106 points in the women's race. The Spartans finished ahead of two other Western Athletic Conference teams entered in the meet -- Nevada and Fresno State. Nevada finished fourth with 128 points while Fresno State was seventh.

In the men's race, Marca covered an 8K course in 26:03. Matt Heard finished 25th overall, Willie Crane was 44th, Jason Blair placed 47th and Jessie McLeod 49th.

The Spartans tallied 124 points in the men's team standings. SJSU also finished one place ahead of Fresno State, which ended up with 146 points.

The next competition for San Jose State is Sept. 30. The women's team will compete at the Women's National Meet in St. Louis, Mo., while the men's team will be at the Stanford Invitational.
