Women's cross country fourth at Fresno State Invitational

Fresno, Calif.-----For the second race in a row, San Jose State University defeated a Pacific-10 Conference team in women’s cross country as the Spartans placed fourth at the Fresno Invitational.

San Jose State posted a team score of 99 points in the 10-team competition at the 5,000-meter Woodward Park course. UC Santa Barbara finished first with 20 points. Chico State, with 52, and Cal Poly with 77 also finished in front of the Spartans. California, which finished behind the Spartans at the season-opening USF Invitational on September 4, was fifth with 144 points.

"We set a school record for the best average time of our five runners," said San Jose State cross country coach Augie Argabright, whose five scoring runners averaged 18:42 to cover the course. "This is the first time we had all five of our top runners under 19 minutes."

Ashleigh Nebeker was the top San Jose State finisher for the second straight meet. She was 13th overall in the field of 109 runners with a 18:26 clocking. Nebeker, Tiffany Hall, Erica Sahli and Valerie Weilert all set personal bests on the Woodward Park course. Weilert, who recorded a time of 18:51, lowered her best mark on the course by two minutes according to the San Jose State coach.

The team returns to action, Saturday, September 25, at the Stanford Invitational on the Stanford University campus.
