Denver, Colo.---Kate Lambdin of the San Jose State women's cross country team has been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for the week of August 30-September 5.
Lambdin, a Junior from South Lake Tahoe, California, crossed the finish line in first place at the Battle of the Bay race on September 4. She finished the 2.95 mile course in 18:48.
Her first place effort was key for San Jose State as they went on to win their season opener by just four points over De Anza College. The Spartans finished in first place out of nine schools in the field.
"Kate has worked very hard all summer long to gear up for this year, and she proved it on Saturday," said Spartans' head coach Augie Argabright. "She showed a great leap in maturity from the previous year by the way she ran this race."
Other nominees for the award included: Julia Veseth, Idaho; Courtney Schultz, New Mexico State; and Jessie Chugg, Utah State.
