Women's cross country finishes third, men seventh at USF Invitational

San Francisco, Calif. The Spartan men’s and women’s cross country teams kicked off the 2005 season at the University of San Francisco Invitational on Saturday, September 3. The Spartan women finished third out of 12 teams with two runners placing in the top 10, while the men finished in seventh place out of eight teams.

The women had four runners finish in the top 25. SJSU junior Tiffany Hall finished third overall, followed by sophomore Erica Sahli, who finished sixth. Marlene Elizalde and Heather Laptalo finished 17th and 25th, respectively, out of 120 total runners.

The San Jose State women scored 70 in the team standings. Stanford University won the team competition with a score of 42. The University of Arizona placed second with a score of 56.

Arianna Lambie of Stanford won the individual competition with a time of 18:18.3.

In the men’s division, junior Jose Burrola was the top Spartan finisher with a time of 27:52.8, followed closely by freshman Ryan Throne with a time of 27:57.0. Burrola and Throne were 47th and 48th in the 74-runner field.

The Spartan men’s team score was 200, 176 points behind champion Arizona, which had a total of 24. Stanford was second with 35 and Santa Clara was third with 92.
