San Francisco, Calif. - The San Jose State women's cross country team began the 2006 season with a third-place finish at the University of San Francisco Invitational on Saturday, September 2. Co-captain Tiffany Hall won the individual competition with a 5K school-record time of 17:37.9.
Hall’s first-place finish was her third individual victory in her last six races. According to Spartan head coach, Augie Argabright, it was the fastest 5K time in Spartan women's cross country history. On the career-best performance, Hall said, “It feels really good to have the top finish, but it’s a team effort. (My teammates) really help me in practice and during the races.”
The Spartan women also had strong performances by co-captain Erica Sahli and freshman Nisha Richardson. Sahli’s sixth-place effort in 18:21.90, was her sixth top-10 finish in her last seven races. Richardson also shined, finishing 13th as she ran the course in 18:46.60 in her first collegiate race.
Argabright was pleased with how the women fared. “For the first meet of the season, it was an outstanding performance. With Tiffany Hall’s finish and strong performances by the newcomers, it was a great way to start the season.”
With 57 points, San Jose State narrowly missed taking second place from host school USF, which scored 53. California won the overall team competition with a total of 34 points. Santa Clara finished fourth with 79 points, UC Santa Cruz finished fifth with 159 points, Pacific finished sixth with 183 points, and San Francisco State finished seventh with 193 points. Although the Spartans competed against Santa Clara, this race will not count toward the "Rivalry Series" between the schools, which will take place on October 14 at the Bronco Invitational.
The Spartan women return to action on Saturday, September 9, at the Aggie Invitational in Davis, Calif.
