Women's Cross Country Seventh In Season Opener

 San Francisco, Calif. -- San Jose State women's cross country in their season-opener finished in seventh place out of 19 teams in the USF Invitational on September 1 in San Francisco, Calif.

The Spartans totaled 206 points on the 5K course through the Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park.

Junior Aylin Mejia was San Jose State's top-finisher in 24th place with a time of 18:48.20. Rebecca Garcia followed in 34th (18:57) and freshman Lalida Maokhamphiou came in 38th (19:04.60).

"I was very pleased with the way the women ran today," said Spartans' head coach Ron Davis. "I could see the competitiveness in them before the race started. They went right  out and challenged the pack."

Marissa Buckley in 58th place (19:36.80) and Alexandra Seda in 70th (19:54.80) rounded out the scorers for San Jose State.

California finished on top of the field Saturday with a total score of 32. Stanford was a close second with 35 points, led by Aisling Cuffe who was the individual winner with a time of 17:08.00.

"I think we have something special here with this team," Davis said. "We have a lot of room for improvement and things will only get better from here on."

San Jose State's next race is on September 14 at the San Francisco State Invitational.
