Women's Cross Country team signs Barstow HS standout

Laurel Stender, a 2000 graduate of Barstow (Calif) High School, has signed a letter of intent with the San Jose State University women's cross country program.

"We feel Laurel is a diamond in the rough. She has the potential to be a great runner for San Jose State," said SJSU head coach Augie Argabright.

Stender was the Most Valuable Player on the cross country team her junior and senior seasons. She was also named the Most Inspirational runner on the 1999 team and was an all-league selection.

Stender also was a member of Barstow's track and field team and played basketball. She was a CIF Division 3 finalist and an all-league pick in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs this season and was named the team's MVP.

Stender also received the Outstanding Athletic Award for Barstow High School and received an All-American Scholar Award.
