40 spring, freshmen and transfer student-athletes named Academic All-WAC

Denver, Colo. – A total of 40 San Jose State University student-athletes have earned Western Athletic Conference All-Academic honors for the 2005-06 season, as announced by the conference office.

A quarter of the Spartan contingent recognized, came from the 2006 spring sports of baseball, men’s golf, softball and women’s tennis, with softball and women’s tennis leading the way with four and three honorees, respectively. Baseball had two selections with men’s golf at one.

Another 30 Spartan freshmen and transfer students from 12 sports were able to be added to the list following the conclusion of their first year on the San Jose State campus. As was the case for the winter sports, swimming and diving had the most student-athletes recognized, with seven, giving them a total of 14 honorees of the 23 on the 2005-06 roster.

Individually, freshman women’s cross country runner Rebecca Palm was one of 16 student-athletes of the 439 named to the lists, to post a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. The sociology major was one of just seven with a 4.00 among 200 freshmen and transfers who earned the distinction.

In addition to Palm, sophomore Kelly Harrison of the softball team posted a 3.83 g.p.a. in behavioral science, followed by baseball junior Greg Fyfe with a 3.79 in chemistry and softball player Mandy Winkley’s 3.75 as an undeclared freshman.

Courtney Koenigsfeld, a senior on the women’s tennis team, topped the list of spring honorees with a 3.66 grade point average in public relations. Sophomore Jon Tringale of men’s golf had a 3.60 grade point average in business/finance.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
