Ashleigh Nebeker wins 5,000 meters at CS Sacramento Spring Festival

Sacramento, Calif.-----Competing in her final meet of the non-traditional spring season, San Jose State University sophomore Ashleigh Nebeker won the 5,000 meters race at the Sacramento Spring Festival held May 3 at Hughes Stadium on the California State University, Sacramento campus.

Nebeker posted a winning time of 18:28.40, more than five seconds better than runner-up Lisa Renteria, an unattached entrant who posted a time of 18:33.61. Nebeker’s winning time would rank 15th for best marks among Western Athletic Conference runners for the 2003 outdoor track season.

"Ashleigh’s had a real good spring. This is her first win on the track. She’s been running very free and easy and has been very dedicated," said Augie Argabright, the Spartans’ cross country coach about Nebeker who won the 16-19 age group division of the annual San Jose Mercury News run in March. "During the spring, you can practice only three days a week and compete in five competitions. So her time is a real good one."

Judy Delong also ran in this race as a San Jose State entrant and finished eighth at 20:06.81.
