Three Programs Earn NCAA APR Public Recognition Award

April 13, 2016

Indianapolis, Ind.----- A San José State University Athletics record three intercollegiate sports programs earned a NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Award.

The men's cross country, women's cross country and women's water polo programs are credited with the maximum possible multi-year score of 1,000 out of 1,000 covering the last four reporting years (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015).

Established in 2005, the NCAA's Public Recognition Award annually honors those NCAA Division I programs committed to academic progress and retention with APR multi-year scores in the top-10 percent of their respective sports.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each scholarship student-athlete. The APR score accounts for eligibility, retention, and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

"We are very proud that for the first time San José State has three programs earn a NCAA Public Recognition Award. Congratulations to our student-athletes and coaches from men's cross country, women's cross country and women's water polo and our academic support staff for earning an NCAA Public Recognition Award," says San José State University director of athletics Gene Bleymaier.

The Spartans' men's cross country program earned its second Public Recognition award in as many years. The women's cross country and women's water polo team program earned their first NCAA Public Recognition Award. Previously, women's gymnastics (4), women's golf (3), women's swimming and diving (1) and women's tennis (1) earned a NCAA Public Recognition Award.

"This is an outstanding achievement. We've had great success with the APR and our student-athletes' grade-point averages," says Jeff Petersmeyer, director of the cross country and women's track and field programs. "The programs are moving in the right direction, and I couldn't be more proud of these teams."

"We're very honored to receive the NCAA Public Recognition Award. We work very hard in all areas of the student-athlete experience," says San José State women's water polo head coach Johnny Bega. "In recruiting, it's important for us to know how our prospective student-athletes value academics, how much they want to be at San José State and how much they want to be a student-athlete. Our process shows it is paying off for us."

"We are proud of the academic accomplishments of these teams earning a NCAA Public Recognition Award. We had several other programs with excellent APR scores that were close to joining the men's cross country, women's cross country and women's water polo teams as recipients of this award," says Elizabeth Jarnigan, San José State's senior associate athletics director for student services.

The NCAA honored 1,071 Division I programs this year with a Public Recognition Award.

The NCAA will release APR scores for all Division I programs on April 20.
