Second place finish for Women's Cross Country at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif.-----The San Jose State University women's cross country team placed second in the California Invitational in Berkeley, California, on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Spartans placed four runners in the top-10.

The Spartans had a team total of 41 while the Golden Bears posted a score of 18. The race was the first-ever dual competition in which the Spartans have participated.

"I thought all the athletes looked really good," said Spartan head coach Augie Argabright. "It was the first time we have been on the course and I think that everyone handled it really well. I was pleased with the performance of Judy DeLong, breaking up Berkeley's top five, and Ashleigh Nebeker ran another good race."

Freshman Judy DeLong was the top Spartan finisher, placing fourth, with a time of 16:51 on the three-mile course. Sophomores Ashleigh Nebeker and Anna Connelly were the next to finish, placing sixth and eighth, respectively. Senior Rebekah Harmer also finished in the top-10, placing ninth, with a time of 17:38.

"The course was similar to what we have been training," noted freshman Judy DeLong. "I think we did well. I am really looking forward to next weekend."

Coach Argabright is also looking forward to the competition next weekend. The team returns to action, Saturday, September 14, at the University of San Francisco Invitational.
