Two-Sport League Champ Will Run With The Spartans

A high school cross country and track league champion, Melanie Fujiwara, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to compete for the San Jose State women's cross country and outdoor track team beginning the 2013-14 season. Head coach Ron Davis made the announcement.

"Melanie is going to be a great addition to our cross country and track programs," Davis said. "We expect her to make an immediate contribution to our team's success in competitions and in the classroom."

As a junior at Paraclete High School in Lancaster, Calif., Fujiwara was the Alpha League champion in the outdoor 3200-meter final. In 2012, she set personal bests in all four of her events: 800m - 2:37.89, 1600m - 5:38.46, 3000m - 11:46.57 and 3200m - 11:36.45.

In cross country, Fujiwara was the 2011 Alpha League individual champion. In 2012, Fujiwara was second out of 87 at the Cross Country Championship West Regional in Walnut Creek, Calif. She ran a personal-best 19:20 5K time of 19:20 at the 2012 Division IV State Championship and finished in 21st place of 202.

Fujiwara's other personal-best cross country times came at the 2.91 mile CIF-SS Division Finals (18:11) and the 2.93 mile CIF-SS Division Prelim (19:01).
