Following its fourth place finish at the 2011 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Women's Water Polo Championship, San Jose State University now has its highest national ranking in 10 years.
The Spartans are fifth in the May 4 poll, the next-to-last poll for 2011. San Jose State (21-13) moved up two spots after being ranked seventh for the last four weeks of the regular season.
Hawaii, which lost to San Jose State in a MPSF quarterfinal round match, dropped from fifth to sixth in the latest weekly poll. Michigan, ranked sixth in the April 27 poll, dropped to 11th after failing to win its conference tournament.
Stanford remains the nation's top-ranked team after defeating San Jose State in the MPSF third-place game on May 1. MPSF Tournament champion California is second followed by UCLA and Southern California. All four teams are in the eight-team 2011 NCAA Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich., May 13-15.
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams occupied eight of the top nine spots in the latest poll.
