Los Angeles, Calif.-----Adriana Vogt became the sixth San Jose State women's water polo player to reach the 60-goal mark in a season and three other Spartans scored two goals each, but San Diego State outlasted San Jose State, 12-10 in overtime, in a consolation round match of the 2010 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament.
Vogt, with 60 goals on the season, led the Spartans (16-14) in scoring with four. Three of her scores tied the match either in the fourth quarter or first overtime between #6-San Jose State and #12-ranked San Diego State (21-14). Vogt's third goal came with 0:09 remaining in the fourth quarter and sent the match into overtime tied, 8-8.
There were eight ties and one lead change in the Spartans' first overtime match of the season. Neither team had more than a two-goal lead at any point of the match.
"It was back and forth. We never got control of the game," said a disappointed San Jose State head coach Lou Tully. "We just didn't get it done. We got in foul trouble early. We made enough mistakes to not win.
"There is so much parity in our conference, you always have to bring your 'A' game."
Dani Curran, Bridget McKee and Janessa Schmidbauer each scored twice to complete the San Jose State scoring.
"We were a little better with our shooting," said Tully about the team's first 10-goal output in four matches. "But, we allowed way too many goals. It was our defense from our field players, not our goalie."
Meagan Minson was busy in goal for the Spartans with a season-high 15 saves.
Melissa de Jonckheere was San Diego State's leading scorer with four goals. Her final tally in the second overtime was the insurance goal for the Aztecs.
San Diego State goalkeeper Kelly Campoli was equally busy as Minson with 14 saves.
San Jose State will play #9-Arizona State for seventh place in the MPSF Championship tournament, Sunday, May 2, at 10:00 a.m. (PDT).
