Water Polo 6th at MPSF Tournament

Tempe, Ariz.-----San Jose State University posted its best finish at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s water polo tournament in the last five years finishing sixth in the 13-team field following a 10-6 loss to #5-ranked San Diego State University in the fifth-place game.

The Spartans (16-13) also completed the season with their first winning record since 2002 when San Jose State was 19-12 and finished sixth in the conference tournament and the national rankings.

Geraldine Hazlett and Alexis Higlett each scored twice for the Spartans. Juliet Moss notched her 55th goal of the season and Angela Riddle accounted for the other San Jose State score. Higlett whose fourth-quarter goal cut the deficit to 8-6, finished 2007 with 44 goals, the fourth time in the last eight seasons two Spartans scored at least 40 goals in the same season.

“The girls battled hard. We played well and so did San Diego State. We just came out a little short on the scoreboard,” said San Jose State coach Lou Tully.

San Jose State goalkeeper Kendra Adama was credited with 12 saves in the match.

“Reflecting on the season as a whole, we should be ranked sixth in the nation (in the final poll),” the Spartans coach added.
