Spartans Lead Entire Way In MPSF Tournament Win

Berkeley, Calif.-----Sophomore Timi Molnar led all players with three goals as San Jose State University defeated CSU Bakersfield, 14-7, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Women’s Water Polo Tournament match.

Molnar was one of five Spartans to score two or more times. Rachel Henry, Kimber Methvin, Victoria Smith and Kelli Leabo each found the cage twice for San Jose State (12-11).

With the Spartans’ win, San Jose State will face host California in the MPSF Tournament’s fifth place game on April 28 at 11:00 a.m.

San Jose State led the entire match and got superb goalkeeping from Maddie Reardon early. Reardon was credited with eight saves including one on a first-quarter power play that was CSU Bakersfield’s best chance to pull even with the Spartans in the match.

“Maddie saved our butts in the beginning and our defense improved a lot from yesterday (against Arizona State),” said Smith. The Spartans led 2-0 after the first quarter, 6-3 at halftime and 10-5 after three quarters.

“It (the Spartans’ play) was definitely more consistent. We did not give up a long run of goals. We did that the last time we played these guys,” said San Jose State head coach Lou Tully. When the Spartans played CSU Bakersfield (12-24) a week earlier, the Roadrunners got back in the match with three unanswered second quarter goals before San Jose State settled in for a 15-7 victory. The Spartans also yielded seven consecutive goals to Arizona State in their opening match in the MPSF Tournament.

“In our meeting yesterday, Coach (Tully) picked out what our main problems were. There were problems with communication, not being aware and our transitions were slow. In this game, everybody was helping each other. Everybody was had each other’s back,” added Smith.

Tully also praised the play of his reserves in the MPSF Tournament win.

“I was really happy with some of our bench players particularly Kelli Leabo. She did a nice job coming up and doing some work at 2-meters. That was nice to see. Dani (Styles), Orla (Brazell) and Alisa. Those four got a chance to play and did a very good job.”
