Stanford, Calif.-----San Jose State scored five goals within a six-minute stretch of the first quarter, but could not sustain its offense in an 11-8 loss to San Diego State in the consolation bracket of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo championship tournament.
Anna Natalizio scored twice during the Spartans' flurry and Dani Curran tallied one of her two goals in the match as San Jose State (18-13) took a 5-3 lead into the second quarter.
"The energy was there. We had some good counter goals in there and we were playing pretty well, but we go in trouble, foul-wise," San Jose State coach Lou Tully said about the start of the match. "Once we got down, it kind of got away from us and we couldn't get back into it."
San Diego State (22-10) then went on a 5-0 scoring run over a 12-minute span in the second and third quarters to take control of the match. The Spartans were able to close their deficit to 8-6 in the third quarter and 10-8 in the fourth, but could get no closer.
"Our offense let us down. We made too many bad passes. Defensively, for the most part, we did a pretty good job," said Tully who was unhappy about the Aztecs' extended rally and the Spartans' inability to find the cage during the middle of the match..
Meagan Minson was credited with eight saves in goal for San Jose State. Kelly Campoli stopped 12 shots for San Diego State which won its second match against the Spartans in three tries this season.
Besides Natalizio and Curran, Allie Stewart scored twice for San Jose State. Ally Waasted and Rachel Henry rounded out the Spartans' scoring. San Diego State's Amber Pezzolla was the leading scorer in the match with four, three coming during the Aztecs' critical 5-0 mid-game run.
San Jose State will close out the 2012 season taking on Hawaii in the 7th place match of the MPSF Tournament at the Avery Aquatic Center. The match starts at 11:00 a.m.
