Water Polo 6th At MPSF Championship

Honolulu, Hawaii-----Seniors Juliet Moss and Tanya Torres each scored two goals in their final women’s water polo match for San Jose State University in the Spartans’ 8-7 loss to the University of Hawaii in the fifth-place match of the 2009 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship.

Torres’ second goal, her 56th of the season, evened the score for the last time in the match, 6-6 with 1:18 left before halftime.

Carmen Eggens of Hawaii (18-8) scored with 12 seconds left in the second quarter to put the Rainbow Wahine ahead for the fifth time in the match. Eggens’ younger sister, Monika Eggens, added her second score of the match midway through the third quarter giving Hawaii its only two-goal lead, 8-6.

Adriana Vogt of San Jose State (20-14) scored the match’s final goal at 1:31 of the third quarter on a 6-on-5 power play. Vogt, a sophomore, became the fourth Spartan in 2009 to reach the 50-goal mark with the final score in the match.

Kathryn Hannum and Dani Curran each scored once to go along with the tallies by Moss, Torres and Vogt.

San Jose State had two one-goal leads in the first half, but could not extend its advantage any further in a match that had three lead changes.

Leone Van Der Molen also scored twice for Hawaii, both on power play opportunities.

Meagan Minson made nine saves in goal for San Jose State. Hawaii’s Serena Bredin stopped eight Spartan shots including three in the scoreless fourth quarter for both teams.

The 6th place finish is San Jose State’s second in the last three seasons at the conference championship tournament. The Spartans posted their third consecutive winning season and reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2000 when the team was 22-18 and finished seventh at the conference championship.
