Spartans Drop 12-8 Decision To ASU At MPSF Tourney

Berkeley, Calif.----- Freshman Rae Lekness scored three times for San Jose State University, but Arizona State University countered with seven unanswered goals in the middle of the match for a 12-8 victory in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s water polo tournament quarterfinal round contest.

The Spartans (11-11), the tournament’s sixth seed, had a pair of one-goal leads with Lekness opening the match’s scoring and Timi Molnar’s first of two scores, a 6-on-5 power play goal at the start of the second quarter for a 3-2 advantage.

Arizona State (26-5), seeded third, got three goals from Shannon Haas and two of Alicia Brightwell’s four scores during the extended Sun Devils’ rally. Haas, fourth in the MPSF in scoring, upped her season scoring to 70 and Brightwell tossed in her 80th goal of the year to wrap up Arizona State’s scoring.

"We  failed to play good defense during that stretch," said San Jose State head coach Lou Tully. "(This season) we have had a hard time stopping the bleeding.

"We have to consider each possession as its own entity. We have to compartmentalize each and every possession."

Sun Devil goalkeeper E.B. Keeve was credited with 16 saves including one on a Molnar first-quarter penalty shot. San Jose State goalkeeper Maddie Reardon made five stops.

Arizona State’s win was its second in two weeks over San Jose State. The Sun Devils stopped the Spartans, 11-8, in Tempe, Ariz., on April 13.

San Jose State continues tournament play on Saturday, April 27, against CSU Bakersfield in an 11:00 a.m. match at the Spieker Aquatics Center on the University of California campus. On April 20, the Spartans posted a 15-7 victory over CSU Bakersfield to conclude the regular season.

"We have to lick our wounds (from today) and come out and play (against CSU Bakersfield)," the Spartans' coach concluded.

The winner of the match advances to the fifth-place game, Sunday, April 28, at 11:00 a.m.
