Ninth-seeded San Jose State defeated No. 8 seed UC Irvine, 5-4, in overtime during the first round of the MPSF Championships Thursday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex. With the victory, the Spartans improve to 15-13 and advance to play undefeated and #1 ranked UCLA Friday.
In a defensive battle, SJSU and UCI traded goals during the first half as the two teams went into the break with the score knotted at 3-3. The Spartans reclaimed their lead at the end of the third period, but Julia Fancher notched the game-tying goal for the Anteaters when she converted a penalty shot with 2:24 left in the game. Both teams had a 6-on-5 opportunity late in the game, but neither was able to find the back of the cage, forcing overtime.
Juliet Moss put the Spartans up for good with a goal at the 2:44 mark in the first overtime.
Bridget McKee and Brianna Lindsey led SJSU with two goals apiece, while UCI's Fancher also tallied a pair of goals.
"This was a great defensive win for us," said head coach Lou Tully. "Kendra (Adama) made some point-blank stops on shots that looked like automatic goals. She was great but everyone contributed."
