#8-Spartans Lose 8-5 To #3-USC

San Jose, Calif.-----The University of Southern California scored three times in the first 2.5 minutes of the match en route to an 8-5 win over San Jose State University in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo match.

USC (19-3, 5-1 MPSF), ranked third nationally, had seven different players score including Kaleigh Gilchrist, who was the Trojans' only multi-goal scorer with a pair.

Three times, #8-San Jose State (14-10, 2-5 MPSF) came within one goal, but could not get a game-tying score. Seniors Dani Curran and Katie Buzzetta each scored twice for the Spartans. Ally Waasted scored San Jose State's other goal.

"We didn't really have a choice. We needed to comeback. This was a game we needed to win for MPSF reasons," said Waasted who scored one of the Spartans' two power play goals.

"I think our defense could have played a lot tighter. We could have held their two-meter off a lot better. It didn't work out for us today. Hopefully, we'll get another chance with them at MPSF."

Goalkeepers Meagan Minson for San Jose State and Flora Bolonyai for USC had a busy day. Minson was credited with 11 saves; Bolonyai, 10.

"We weren't ready to play. It was quite obvious. We were just going through the motions and they got three on us right off the bat. I had to call time out and give them a wakeup call," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully. "You can't spot anybody three goals. We ended up with a three-goal differential at the end."

San Jose State concluded its MPSF schedule with the USC match. The Spartans are currently in sixth place. Should USC lose at Stanford on April 7, the two teams will meet again in the first round of the MPSF Championship Tournament, Friday, April 27, at Stanford.
