#10-Spartans Host #5-Cal Seek MPSF Water Polo Win

The San Jose State University women’s water polo team plays its fourth match against a top-five nationally-ranked opponent in four weeks when the Spartans host the University of California in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match, Saturday, April 6. The #10-Spartans and #5-Golden Bears meet at 12:00 p.m. at the Aquatic Center.

San Jose State (10-9, 0-3 MPSF) is coming off a 15-8 loss to #4-UCLA. The Spartans’ eight goals were the most scored by a San Jose State team against UCLA in the 15-year series between the teams. However, the Spartans are seeking to tighten up defensively, particularly against MPSF opponents. San Jose State is giving up an average of 16 goals a match after playing #1-USC, #2-Stanford and UCLA. The loss to the Bruins dropped the Spartans down one spot in the Collegiate Water Polo Association weekly coaches’ poll.

Cal (13-5, 0-3 MPSF) also seeks its first conference win of the season. The Golden Bears, too, were defeated by USC and UCLA at the start of conference action. Third in the MPSF in scoring, Cal is averaging 11.5 goals a match compared to San Jose State’s 9.83. Seniors Emily Csikos, third in the MPSF with a 2.39 goals per match average, Breda Vosters with 23 goals are Cal’s top scorers.

San Jose State’s Rae Lekness is the MPSF’s highest scoring freshman with a 2.28 average and ranks sixth in the conference with 41 goals heading into the Cal contest. Sophomore Timi Molnar has 39 goals including three in the UCLA loss.
