#6-Spartans Take 7-Match Win Streak To Bronco Invite

Riding the crest of a season-best seven match winning streak, San Jose State University, ranked sixth in the latest national poll, takes on three top-20 ranked teams at the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara University, April 4 & 5.

The Spartans (15-11) open the two-day event taking on #18-ranked UC San Diego (7-14) at 10:40 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 and conclude first-day play against unranked Cal State San Bernardino (9-17) at 5:20 p.m. San Jose State takes on Cal State Bakersfield (16-11), ranked 16th, Sunday, April 5, at 10:00 a.m. and finishes up its four-match weekend against #10-ranked Loyola Marymount (17-5) at 4:00 p.m.

The Spartans are facing all but Loyola Marymount for the first time this season. San Jose State edged Loyola Marymount, 9-8, in an opening-round match at the UC Irvine Invitational in February.

During the winning streak, San Jose State has picked up its offense significantly. The Spartans are averaging 14.6 goals per match in their last seven outings and have a season average over 10.0 for the first time this season with a 10.65 mark. With five matches left before the conference championship at the end of the month, the team’s single-season scoring record of 300 goals is likely to fall. Currently, the Spartans have 277 goals.

San Jose State is one of two schools in the powerful Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), a conference in which all eight teams are ranked between 1-8 in the nation, with two field players ranked among the top-10 scorers in scoring and at the 50-goal plateau with a month left in the regular season. Juliet Moss, a current MPSF Player of the Week, leads the Spartans with 57 goals and is seventh in the conference in scoring average. Dani Curran is next in the MPSF in scoring average and is the first San Jose State freshman to score 50 goals in a season.

Senior Tanya Torres, with a personal single-season best 42 goals; Adriana Vogt, 32; and Bridget McKee, 31; give San Jose State three more real scoring threats.

The Bronco Invitational takes place at the Sullivan Aquatic Center on the Santa Clara University campus. Ticket prices are $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for youths, students and seniors.
