Woodland, Calif.----- Playing her most complete match of the season in San Jose State University's 8-5 win at the University of Hawaii, freshman Victoria Smith was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Newcomer of the Week.
Smith (Vancouver, B.C.) won all four opening-quarter sprints, scored twice and was one of two Spartans assigned to defend Hawaii's Amarens Genee, who came in to the game as the MPSF's No. 4 scorer. Genee had just one shot attempt and did not score in the game.
The San Jose State freshman's first score was a second quarter go-ahead goal followed by another that gave the Spartans a key two-goal lead at the start of the fourth quarter.
Winners of six of their seven matches, #9-San Jose State (13-8, 1-3 MPSF) hosts #8-San Diego State (17-7, 1-4 MPSF) and #4-Arizona State (20-4, 2-2 MPSF) in a pair of conference contests, Saturday, March 31, and Sunday, April 1, respectively, at The Aquatics Center. Each match begins at 1:00 p.m.
