Sweep At Aztec Invite; Torres - 5 Goals In Hartwick Win

San Diego, Calif.-----Tanya Torres matched her single-game career high with five goals leading #9-San Jose State University to a 16-7 victory over #12-Hartwick College in the Spartans’ third and final contest at the Aztec Invitational women’s water polo tournament.

Torres was one of seven goal scorers for San Jose State (11-11), which won all three of its Aztec Invitational matches hosted by San Diego State. In 2008, Torres scored five goals in a February 10 win over Michigan.

“With Hartwick concentrating on stopping Juliet (Moss), her teammates found Tanya a lot. She scored three goals at the 2-metter and had some very nice assists from her teammates,” said associate head coach Johnny Bega about the Spartans that regained the .500 mark for the first time since February 22.

Despite Hartwick’s attempts to keep Moss out of the Spartans’ offense, San Jose State’s second-leading goal scorer this season found the cage four times to raise her season total to 40.

“We’ve been playing a lot of great water polo. There are two kinds of losses a loss when you leave with your head down and a loss when you leave with your head up. When you play the top teams the way we have and have them come up to us after saying we had to watch out for you guys. You played us the toughest,’ we’ve been playing a lot of great water polo,” said Adriana Vogt, about a three-week stretch in which the Spartans played five out of six matches against teams ranked no lower than fifth in the national poll.

“After playing these great teams, we realize we can play and that’s why we got these wins this week,” added Vogt who scored three times in the Hartwick win and had five tallies for the weekend.

The Spartans took a 7-5 lead into the third quarter and ran away with the match win with seven unanswered goals in the quarter.

“We played really good defense in the second half and came together on offense. Every possession (in the third quarter) was a goal,” said Bega about the Spartans who also knocked off #5-San Diego State and #18-Indiana on March 21.

Dani Curran, Bridget McKee, Allie Stewart and Alyssa Friesen each scored once for San Jose State. Kelly Kennison made seven saves in goal for the Spartans.

Hartwick (16-8), which had a 15-match winning streak stopped at the Aztec Invitational, had two-goal performances by Kirsten Hudson and Jessica McKee.

San Jose State returns to action, March 28-29, at the Arizona State Invitational.
