Harberts Leads Water Polo Past UCSB

In his season preview, Lou Tully said that Beth Harberts is someone “you can count on in the clutch.” The statement was true today as Harberts paced a short-handed Spartan water polo team past UCSB, 6-5, in Santa Barbara.

“Beth was the hero of the day, including scoring one that was highlight reel all the way,” Tully said. “She was big for us all game long.”

The Spartans, without junior Tanya Torres in the lineup today, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first and led 3-1 entering halftime. The Gauchos cut the score to 4-3 after the third and the teams traded scores in the final frame.

Harberts put three into the net and was joined in the scoring column by Bridget McKee, Kelly Pearce and Adrianna Vogt. Kendra Adama had eight saves in the cage for San Jose State.

Next up is a 1:00 match Sunday with the top-ranked UCLA Bruins in Westwood.
