Harberts, Torres Score Twice Against Aztecs

Beth Harberts, Tanya Torres and Adrianna Vogt scored two goals each Sunday, but it was a goal from San Diego State’s Anna Gonzales with :36 seconds remaining that gave the visiting Aztecs a 9-8 victory over the eighth-ranked Spartans.

San Jose State falls to 8-8 on the year and 1-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The seventh-ranked Aztecs improve to 14-2 overall.

The Aztecs jumped to a 3-1 lead in the first thanks to two goals from Gonzales and a solo score from Danielle Pelke while Harberts added the lone Spartan goal. Harberts and Torres paced the home team effort in the second, scoring two of the three goals to tie the score at the midway point.

The Spartans appeared to take control of the match with a strong third quarter with a two-goal effort from Vogt and solo scores from Torres and Bridget McKee. Leading 8-6 to start the final frame, the Spartans were held scoreless and the Aztecs rallied behind the play of Gonzales.

“I thought we did a pretty good job overall. We just got in foul trouble early and lost Juliet (Moss) for the game,” head coach Lou Tully said. “We weren’t able to get into a real solid rotation after that although our kids battled hard and responded well.”
