Newport Beach, Calif.-----Senior Adriana Vogt scored 11 goals in two matches including a personal single-game best seven as San Jose State University won its final two matches at the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament.
The #11-nationally ranked Spartans (10-8) finished ninth in the 16-team tournament after defeating #15-UC Santa Barbara, 11-9, and #12-Long Beach State, 10-8.
Vogt scored four times in the UC Santa Barbara match to open the second day of the two-day tournament. Her seven scores in the Long Beach State win nearly matched the 49ers' team total singlehandedly and were two more than her previous single-game best five goals at Loyola Marymount last year.
The San Jose State power play played a key role in the two victories. The Spartans were 10-of-20 during the final day with Vogt converting five 6-on-5 opportunities in the Long Beach match alone.
"She was shooting very well. It was a banner day for her," San Jose State coach Lou Tully said about his co-captain.
In the four-match tournament, the San Jose State senior from Menlo Park, Calif., scored 16 goals to give her 39 for the season and 198 for her career. She is one tally away from moving into a second-place tie with Inna Fedoseyeva (1999-2002) at 199 and eight away from Juliet Moss' (2006-09) career school record of 206.
While Vogt handled most of the scoring load, goalkeeper Meagan Minson anchored the San Jose State defense with 10 saves in the UC Santa Barbara win and a season-high 14 against Long Beach State.
"Minson turned in another ousttanding performance. She did a very good job in the cage. Against Long Beach, she stopped a penalty shot and made four 6-on-5 saves," the Spartans coach said about the team's number-one goalkeeper.
San Jose State returns to action, Saturday, March 12, at the San Diego State Invitational with matches against host San Diego State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest and Cal State Northridge in a non-conference encounter.
