Water Polo Splits Pair At UC Irvine Invite

Newport Beach, Calif.----Timi Molnar scored four times leading San Jose State to an 11-8 win over Cal State Bakersfield highlighting the Spartans' first-day at the UC Irvine Invitational.

Adriana Vogt and Katie Buzzetta each scored twice giving San Jose State (8-8) three multi-goal scorers in the win. Ally Waasted, Dani Curran and Anna Natalizio rounded the Spartans' scoring in the victory.

San Jose State opened the 16-team invitational losing to #9-Arizona State, 9-8. Like the recent matches against Hawaii and California, the Spartans fell behind early and were forced to battle back. Down 4-1 after a quarter, San Jose State tied the match at 6-6 in the third, but never gained the lead.

"We got off to a terrible start. We had a couple of mistakes on defense and we were down early," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully about the loss to Arizona State. "It's a game that could have gone either way."

Meagan Minson was one of the busiest goalkeepers for any of the 16 teams. She made 20 saves - 12 of them in the Arizona State contest.

"It might have been the best game she's played," Tully said of Minson's play against the Sun Devils. "She blocked a penalty shot and some shots at point-blank range. She played a tremendous game."

Tully also pointed out that the Spartans continued to struggle in 6-on-5 opportunities going 1-for-11 against Arizona State. The Sun Devils were slightly better at 3-for-9, enough for the win.

Vogt was the Spartans' leading scorer in the opening match with three. Curran joined Vogt as the San Jose State players to score in both first-day matches with two goals. Allie Stewart, Kelly Stewart and Alyssa Friesen each scored once against Arizona State.

San Jose State opens second-day play against #15-UC Santa Barbara. The Spartans conclude their invitational action against either Long Beach State or UC Irvine.
