Irvine, Calif.-----Adriana Vogt scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in the match giving San Jose State a 9-8 win over #7-ranked Loyola Marymount in the Spartans' first match of the UC Irvine Invitational.
The #10-ranked Spartans (8-6) came back from a 4-1 first-quarter deficit to end a six-match losing streak.
Vogt's goal was her second of the match. Dani Curran also scored twice for San Jose State in the win.
"We got in a little bit of a hole. They had four goals, three of them on power plays in the first quarter," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully. "We didn't panic. We just played and did what we were supposed to do."
Ally Waasted, Kathryn Hannum, Anna Natalizio, Kimber Methvin and Allie Stewart scored once for the Spartans.
Meagan Minson was credited with 11 saves. The one save she didn't have to make came in the final minute. Facing a penalty shot from Loyola Marymount's Kimberly Benedetti, who had scored five times already, Benedetti completely missed the cage.
That wasn't the case for Vogt who got inside her defender and made a terrific shot off the water acording to Tully.
"We did a great job of taking care of the ball," Tully said about the win. He recounted just four ball-handling errors in the win.
The Spartans concluded first-day play losing 15-5 to #2-ranked USC. Trailing 4-2 after the first quarter, the Trojans scored seven times in the second quarter and coasted to their second win over San Jose State in three weeks.
Hannum was the only multi-goal scorer for the Spartans (8-7) against USC with two. Waasted, Kelly Stewart and Bridget McKee each had one. San Jose State had its chances offensively. USC goalkeeper Tumua Anae made 16 saves.
