Water Polo Splits Pair At UC Irvine Invite

Irvine, Calif.-----San Jose State picked up its first win in six matches with a 15-11 victory over UC San Diego in first-day play at the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament.

Senior Dani Curran, junior Anna Natalizio and freshman Victoria Smith accounted for 13 of the team's season-high 15 goals scored in a match. Curran found the cgae five times; Natalzio and Smith, four each. Katie Buzzetta and Allie Stewart accounted for  the other two San Jose State scores.

"We had a tremendous start. We were active and had hard counters. We got everybody into the game and did a nice job," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully about his team that entered the two-day, 16-team tournament ranked eighth nationally.

The Spartans opened the Invitational with a 7-4 loss to #9-San Diego State. The two teams were tied 2-2 at halftime and San Jose State trailed, 5-4, heading to the final quarter.

Buzzetta was the only Spartan multi-goal scorer with two.

"The problem in the morning was our offense. We were not doing the things we had worked on in practice all week," said the San Jose State, who believed the played consistently good defense throughout the match.

San Jose State will open the final day's play against UC Santa Barbara in an 8:00 a.m. contest. At the start of the season, the Spartans topped the Gauchos, 12-8 in the Spartan Invitational.
