IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 6 San Jose State University water polo team went 1-1 on the last day of the UC Irvine Invitational on Sunday, February 25. The Spartans defeated No. 10 UC Davis in the first game of the day, 12-9, to advance to the fifth-place match against the host team where they fell 8-5. With the split, the Spartans’ record stands at 6-7 on the season.
San Jose State opened the first game with four goals in the first quarter. The Spartans added two more goals in the second quarter to head into intermission with a 6-3 lead. Davis began a comeback in the third quarter with three goals to bring the score to 8-6 heading into the final quarter.
Davis tied the score at eight before the Spartans went on a four-goal run led by Deanna Lowry to take the lead and the game. Lowry had three goals in the quarter for San Jose State to lead the team in goals along with Alexis Higlett.
Also scoring in the game for the Spartans were Juliet Moss with two goals and Bridgett McKee, Tonya Torres, Cynthia Gazzolo and Kathryn Hannum each with one. Junior Kendra Adama had eight saves in the game.
In the Spartans’ loss to No. 9 UC Irvine, defense played a key role for both teams. Adama added another eight saves to her career statistics while the Anteaters’ Lauren Machanis had 11. San Jose State kept Irvine to just eight goals, six of which came in the second half. In the first half, both teams were held to just two goals apiece.
San Jose State took an early lead with two goals in the first quarter, both scored by Lowry. The Spartans fell behind in the third quarter as they scored only one goal in the period while the Anteaters scored three to take the lead 5-3. Irvine added another three goals in the final period to solidify the win. The Spartans scored two goals in the fourth stanza, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit established in the third quarter.
San Jose State will be back in action again on March 3 at San Diego State.
