Water Polo Upset Bid Falls Short Against Stanford

San Jose, Calif. - The No. 6 San Jose State University women's water polo team could not overcome an early deficit, losing to No. 2 Stanford (9-1), 11-6, in the second game of the UC Irvine Tournament on February 24.

Two hours after defeating No. 11 Arizona State 9-6 in the first round of the UC Irvine Tournament, the Spartans (5-6) faced off against another top team in the country, Stanford. San Jose State started the match strong; finishing the first quarter down one goal, 3-2, but the Spartans could not keep pace with the Cardinal, finishing the first half down, 6-2. The second half was much different, with the Spartans storming back with three-third quarter goals, finding themselves down three goals entering the final frame. Ultimately, the two games against ranked opponents took its toll on the Spartan defense, yielding three goals to the Cardinal, ending with a final score of 11-6.

Juliet Moss led the Spartans with a two goal performance. It was Moss’ fifth multiple goals scored game, a team high. Moss’ two goals gave the sophomore 15 goals on the season, one behind team leader, Beth Harberts, with 16. Earlier in the day, Moss scored once in the Spartan victory over Arizona State, giving her three goals on the afternoon.

Tanya Torres, Alexis Higlett, Deanna Lowry and Brianna Lindsey all added a goal in the Spartan effort. Lowry’s goal was her second against Stanford, after scoring once against the Cardinal in a match earlier this year.

Although the Spartans and Cardinal have already faced off twice this season, neither match will count towards either’s team’s MPSF conference record, for the reason that both teams met in tournament play. The match that will count towards both team’s conference record will take place on Saturday, April 21, at Stanford, Calif.

The Spartans will continue to face ranked opponents on day two of the UC Irvine Tournament, taking on No. 10 UC Davis, at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, February 25.
