Water Polo Earns Split On Day One Of Invite

The No. 7 San Jose State Spartans split a pair of games on the opening day of the UC Irvine Women's Water Polo Invitational Saturday at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The Spartans defeated No. 10 UC Irvine in the opening round of the tournament with a convincing 12-3 victory. Tanya Torres, Adrianna Vogt and Juliet Moss each had three goals for San Jose State in the win. Kathryn Hannum added two goals and senior goalie Kendra Adama was spectacular in the cage with 12 saves.

“Just a good, solid overall team effort against UCI,” said head coach Lou Tully. “We came out ready to play and really never let them in the game.”

In the afternoon quarterfinal round, San Jose dropped a 15-8 decision to 2nd ranked Stanford. The Spartans were outscored 5-1 in a decisive second-quarter and were not able to overcome the first-half deficit. Vogt paced the scoring with three goals, followed by Bridget McKee and Brianna Lindsey with two goals each.

The Spartans, 7-5 overall, return to action Sunday morning at 9:15 to face the loser of Saturday evenings match between USC and UC Davis.
