Irvine, Calif.-----Tanya Torres scored on a couner attack with :05 left in the fourth quarter giving San Jose State a 9-8 win over Loyola Marymount in the opening round of the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament.
Torres scored both of her goals in the second half and was one of three Spartans to score two or more times in the win. Juliet Moss scored once in each of the first three periods and Dani Curran opened San Jose State's scoring with two first-period tallies.
"We controlled the game the entire time, but let up in the third quarter. Tanya and Juliet stepped up for us," said associate head coach Johnny Bega.
"Tanya stole the ball and Juliet passed it ahead to her," Bega said about the game-winning play.
San Jose State never trailed and led 5-2 in the second quarter after a Kelly Stewart goal at 2:30. LMU (3-3) tied the match three times. The last was at 8-8 after a Diana Romero goal at 1:44. Both teams were unable to convert on a power play opportunity before Torres nailed the game-winning goal.
Meagan Minson played the entire game in goal for the Spartans and was credited with nine saves, four in the final period. Eliana Arellano made 10 saves in goal for Loyola Marymount.
In the nightcap, #2-ranked Stanford led San Jose State (8-6) from start to finish in a 13-7 decision. Torres scored twice to lead the Spartans in scoring. Moss, Adriana Vogt, ALyssa Friesen, Kelly Stewart and Janessa Schmidbauer also found the goal mouth for San Jose State.
"We were flat," Bega said. "We need to be more consistent and play each game as hard as we can.
"We learned a lot, Stanford is a good, smart team. We didn't react to what they were doing."
The Spartans play their third game of the UC Irvine Invitational, Sunday, February 22, against San Diego State, at 9:15 a.m.
