Berkeley, Calif.-----Victoria Smith, Anna Natalizio and Ally Waasted scored for San Jose State University, but three University of California players scored two or more goals as the Golden Bears topped the Spartans, 8-3, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match.
Breda Vosters scored her three goals in the first quarter and Kirsten Mase and Elizabeth McLaren each added a pair of scores for the #4-ranked Golden Bears (12-2, 2-0 MPSF).
"Between bad shots and turnovers and bad passing, you can't win a game that way," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully, who didn't have senior Kelly Stewart and sophomore Timi Molnar available to play due to illness and injury, respectively, for the second week in a row. "We have to eliminate the turnovers. That's the key."
"We didn't have a lot of movement on offense. We weren't converting like we should," said senior Allie Stewart about the Spartans who have lost their last four matches, all to top-10 ranked teams.
San Jose State goalkeeper Meagan Minson had a busy afternoon making 12 saves. Cal goalkeepers Lindsey Dorst and Savanna Smith each made five saves.
The Spartans (6-5, 0-2 MPSF) return to action next weekend playing in the 16-team UC Irvine Invitational. San Jose State's first match on February 25, is against #9-San Diego State in a non-conference match.
