San Jose, Calif.-----Adriana Vogt and Katie Buzzetta each scored twice for San Jose State, but the Spartans were unable to get their offense going early in a 11-6 loss to California in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match.
The Spartans (7-7, 0-2 MPSF) went scoreless in the first quarter and were unable to take advantage of their first six 6-on-5 power plays as #4-ranked Cal (11-2, 2-0 MPSF) broke out to a 5-0 second quarter lead.
"We lost this game in the first quarter. We couldn't buy a goal and we gave up four goals to them. We didn't pick up people in front of the cage. We allowed them to get counter-attack goals so we didn't play defense the way we're supposed to play defense (in the first quarter)," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully.
The Spartans had high hopes going into a rematch with the Golden Bears. Two weeks earlier at the Stanford Invitational, San Jose State and Cal were tied, 8-8 in the third quarter, before the Golden Bears pulled away for a 14-10 win.
"Today was a perfect example of 6-on-5's being key for us. We were having good movement (with the ball). I also think we need to play better defense," said Vogt. "When a team scores four goals on you in the first quarter, especially in a water polo game, things are not going to turn out well.
"They were scoring off of our misses and mistakes in the first quarter and that was unfortunate for us."
Dani Curran and Timi Molnar also scored for San Jose State that lost to Cal for the second time this season.
Emily Csikos of Cal scored three goals in the first half to lead all players in scoring. Dana Ochsner, Elizabeth McLaren and Katie Monton each scored twice for the Golden Bears.
Meagan Minson of San Jose State and Stephanie Peckham of Cal each made seven saves for their team.
