#8-Ranked Spartans Off To UC Irvine Invitational

The San Jose State University women’s water polo team returns to action, Saturday, February 21, and may face two top-10 teams in first-day play at the UC Irvine Invitational.

The Spartans (7-5, 1-1 MPSF), ranked eighth nationally in the February 18 poll, take on Loyola Marymount (3-2) at 10:15 a.m. in the first of three pool play matches. Later the same day, San Jose State meets either #2-ranked Stanford (7-1, 1-0 MPSF) or #16-UC San Diego (3-3).

“LMU has one player (Nicole Hughes) who is scoring a majority of their goals. She is a very strong player. They have some smaller players, too, who are very talented and quick and understand the game extremely well. We’ll have to be sharp and very active to play well against them. That’s what we’ve been working on this week,” said San Jose State head coach Lou Tully about the first of four opponents this weekend.

“We’re trying to spend additional time on shooting. We didn’t shoot very well against Cal. We need better balance knowing when to shoot and not to shoot. Our counter attack is critical. They’re going to counter well. Third, in the Cal game, our power play the wheels came off. We were 2-for-10. That’s an area where we should be 50 percent.”

All 16 teams in the two-day invitational are ranked in the top-20. San Jose State’s first-day action will be at the Corona Del Mar High pool. The Spartans’ two matches on Sunday, February 22, will be at Corona Del Mar High or at the UC Irvine Anteater pool.
