Water Polo Drops 12-5 Decision to USC

SAN JOSE, Calif. Junior Kendra Adama made 12 saves, but it was not enough as the No. 6 San Jose State University water polo team fell to No. 2 USC, 12-5, on Sunday, February 18. The loss drops the Spartans’ record to 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while the Women of Troy improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the MPSF.

Each of San Jose State’s five goals came from five different players. Recording goals for the Spartans were Alexis Higlett, Geraldine Hazlett, Angela Riddle, Deanna Lowry and Cynthia Gazzolo. All but one of San Jose State’s goals were scored in the second half. The lone goal of the first half was scored by Hazlett at the 4:52 mark of the first quarter.

It was USC that dominated in the first half. The Women of Troy notched three goals in the first quarter and four in the second for a total of seven in the half. Brittany Hayes and Kami Craig each tallied two in the half.

In the second half, the Spartans rallied with four goals. They scored two in the third quarter and two in the second, but USC notched five in the half to finish with the win. Five of the Trojans’ goals came in man-up situations.

“You have to give credit to USC,” said head coach Lou Tully. “They came off of a tough loss [to Stanford] yesterday and we wondered how they would respond, and they responded well.”

The Spartans took 18 shots in the game, five of which hit the post.

“We weren’t patient,” said Tully. “Out biggest problem is that we were trying to force things on offense. We had unexpected turnovers and we were jammed on offense.”

San Jose State will be in action again at thee UC Irvine Tournament on February 24-25. The Spartans will begin the tournament with a game against Arizona State on February 24 at 12:45 p.m. The second game will either be against Stanford or Michigan later that same afternoon. Sunday’s game will be determined by the wins and losses recorded on Saturday.
